Apologies about the delay! Here's the plotting post for the next two segments on the Masquerade Plot, going up within the next day. Below, in addition to the plotting details, are the revised schedule, the updated Player Resources for the Jaunt, a full listing of infiltrators, and links to the last post.

The first mingle going up will be in the downtime between dances - during the depths of daytime, when the lanterns are dim and emanating heat and most of the delegates are resting, it's the perfect time to be out and doing things you oughtn't, like spying on other delegates, making secret rendezvouz, or trying to break into locked chambers. While characters can wear their masks during this time, they're not likely to, especially if they're at all religious. By this time, it will be generally known that the number of stowaways is unusually high this year, leading to added suspicion and intrigue - but stowaways aren't technically illegal, under the Pax Calendrica. For this mingle, use the Unmasked Plotting thread, although at your option you may still log into [personal profile] whocanname if your character will ONLY be going about masked.

The Constellation Dance is a little more complicated than the simple waltz of the opening dance. Dancers form small chains, rings, and other linked groups, mimicking the stars above, and the ballroom doors open - along with, seemingly at random to the untrained eye, many of the other doors in the Orrery. As the evening progresses, these clusters of dancers drift out through the complex, experiencing the mysteries of the Starmovers. For those who like exploration and small group intrigue, this is the height of the Masquerade. Sort out your dance partners in the Masked Plotting comment below, along with whatever other anonymous planning, discussion, and threadsquee you wish to have. (For Masked Plotting comments, you're encouraged to log into [personal profile] whocanname, just as if it were an IC Masquerade post, but if you're finding the anonymity is hard on you, you may certainly plot unmasked).

Masks!

One of the concerns players expressed about this plot was the ability to choose their own masks. While the anonymity element of this is important to us, we do want to be as accommodating as we can, so for players who are interested, there are two options.

1) email matt at [email protected], or private plurk him @ mattnificent, with a single 100 x 100 iconable image of your desired mask, along with a note telling him which character it's for. It will be uploaded to the mask account and assigned to them.

2) again, email or PP Matt, not at the mod accounts, with a ranked list of 3-5 of your favorite masks that have already uploaded to the masquerade account. If possible, one of them will be assigned to your character, but they will be assigned first-come first-served, so availability may be limited. If there are 3-5 masks you particularly dislike, note that too!

In either case, masks must be picked out by 11 PM CST on December 11th. If you're fine being assigned a mask randomly, that's perfectly all right! We'll parcel random assignments out to those who don't email or PP.

Masquerade masks can be viewed here.

The Solstice Masquerade
December 10th - January 3rd

Nibiru is a harsh world, slow-turning, tilted close to a bright sun, and the people who live there have grown to revere night, cold, and the starry sky as instruments of blissful salvation. Their most important holiday, therefore, is the Winter Solstice, the coming of dark and snow to cool them for a few months before the threat of the sun renews itself. But there’s more to it than simple celebration. The people of Nibiru believe that unless the Great Orrery is ritually empowered once each year, the world will stop turning properly, and endless summer will destroy them all.

So, for the weeks leading up to the Solstice, the most sacred duty of Nibiru’s elite is to travel to the Orrery, a massive structure built with technology beyond their understanding, by absent beings they call the Starmovers, and revere as extraterrestrial angels. Wars stop for the Solstice. Trials are delayed. There are no elections, no marriages, no function of religion, government, or politics that can be allowed to interfere.

At the Orrery, the chosen delegates explore mazes of mysterious chambers that lock and unlock in response to stately celestial mathematics. They don ritual garb left there by the Starmovers. And they dance four ritual dances, each a week or so apart, in the great ballroom, wearing masks that cannot be removed, in order to keep the world turning.

This sacred celebration is a solemn thing, but for those less superstitious, it’s also a golden opportunity. In the ballroom, secret bargains can be struck. Forbidden affairs can begin, or end, in anonymity. Criminals may seek pardon, or perhaps new crimes. Treaties can be negotiated and signed, in violation of all taboo. But all of that relies on knowing who lies behind which mask.

And then there are those who seek other advantages - the technology and knowledge of the Starmovers. Even a little of it has helped revolutionize what the people of Nibiru are capable of, bringing them solar power, clockwork mechanisms, and a space race yet to be won - as well as laser weapons, advanced physics and chemistry, and other advances that place pseudo-Victorian cultures into a modern industrial revolution like that of the 1950s.

The people of Nibiru are living their lives on the brink of great changes they cannot yet understand. And the Travelers present may have to decide what’s more important: helping them… or taking dance lessons to save the world (if you believe in that kind of thing).

Questions

[personal profile] powersthatbe
Every year, the Calendrical Parliament holds a religious rite at the Great Orrery - a dance of gratitude for winter, the blessed darkness and the cool relief of snow from another searing summer. It is believed by many that without the Solstice Masquerade, the winter would not come; that the dance empowers the Orrery to continue the procession of the equinoxes and keep the seasons in their proper cycle.

It is a time of peace and celebration… but for reasons of ritual and politics, the forms are strictly observed. No-one recalls who built the Orrery or knows what makes its doors and dials function. Maybe it really is the dance. The smooth, beautiful technology of the place - its clockwork, its automated hallways and shifting orbital mazes - are a mystery to all. But one thing is understood. In the ballroom, it’s impossible (and forbidden, too) to remove a mask. That makes it a perfect time for exchanged secrets, forbidden romances, and all sorts of behavior only anonymity makes possible.

And as the Travelers will discover, that’s just as true for them as for anyone else...
