Triad Creation Tourney - Jaunt Info

The Triad Creation Tourney
March 12-April 21

Her Majesty’s Royal Academy of the Arts, the foremost magical arts academy of Great Britain, is hosting the triannual Triad Creation Tourney, in which they and two other magical schools--the United States’ Lone Star Academy and Japan’s Teikoku Majutsu-shi no Gakuen--compete to create the ultimate magical artistic creation. This year, however, things are far from going as planned. With rumors of cheating rampant and a would-be evil overlord having snuck into the school, the Travelers will have their work cut out for them getting this Triad Creation Tourney to its end!

QUESTIONS

This setting is originally Blue's brainchild, with bii and Airdra later contributing to it. Any of the three of them can answer questions. bii and Jill are also here for Mod-side questions.

Is there an Indian (as in the subcontinent) school of note somewhere in the worldbuilding, or can I make one up? (would it be kosher for a teacher from there to be visiting Majesty's for a while as like a teacher exchange?)

How common is it for someone to have both a performance art (say, dance) and a perpetual one (say tattoos) in their repertoire?

Speaking of tattoos: do henna tattoos count as perpetual (if a rather short lived) along with other kinds? Also what kind of things would tattoos specifically do? (I'm thinking of keeping it, but also don't want to step on the toes of Claudia's plot role skill from Bando)

Do things like body piercings, makeup, nail art and hair cut/dye/styling potentially count as magic? (I'm fairly sure some of them do but always good to get confirmation before going wild with a thing)

I have a technical rules question so I guess bii or Jill.

1) Would Artistic Proficiency or Artistic Mastery be a prerequisite for the Creativity Magic skills?

2) If so, would Musical Proficiency or Musical Mastery (from Showtime) also work as a substitute prereq?

  1. The three schools involved are definitely not the only ones of note, but we haven’t created any others - so you’re totally welcome to make one up. (And a teacher exchange is also doable!)

  2. Probably not super common, but not unheard of either. And it would be harder to really excel at both - someone who practiced both would be more likely to be a jack of all trades than a master. On the other hand, they might be able to do interesting things by blending the two.

  3. Henna tattoos probably would count as perpetual - perfomance tends to be more about the actions of the artist in the moment. As for what they’d do, there’s a lot of room for players inventing this themselves. But some ideas might be that the henna tattoos give someone certain feelings while being worn, or certain strengths. Or it could even just be that they move and change colours and glow in the dark and look really cool.

  4. Body piercings, make-up, nail art and hairdressing can totally count as magic! The key here is creativity, and that’s not something that’s exclusive to traditional arts.

Is mind-affecting magic a thing in this setting?

Are curses/hostile magic a thing in this setting?

[personal profile] powersthatbii 2018-03-04 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
1) Nope! They're just if you want to get new art skills from infiltrating etc.

2) But those can be substituted for Artistic Profiency/Artistic Mastery anyway, at least when it comes to music stuff.

There is certainly magic that can have an effect on someone’s mind. Evoking particular emotional states is probably the more common, but other mental effects are also possible.

And yes, there are certainly examples of hostile magic. Sometimes this is in the way of magic gone awry (which can happen with people who haven’t got proper magical training), but there are also people who would intentionally create hostile magics.

Would theorycrafting for collectible card games or similar count as a form of transitory magic?

What about game design proper?

I’m not sure I really understand what theorycrafting is, I’m afraid - can you elaborate on what that is?

In games like Magic: The Gathering, you need to create a deck from a pool of cards far larger than the number you can reasonably include in a tournament-legal deck.

Theorycrafting in this sense is building decks as an expression of creativity, to figure out if a crazy combo works and is viable rather than with a reasonable expectation of winning against a No Fun Allowed serious tournament deck.

I suspect that this would be Transitive rather than Perpetual, while the game is in play. Madoka would try this regardless of whether or not it works; she'd also try game design proper.

Hmm. I’m not sure if this would count, I’m afraid. I mean, there’s creativity there, but it seems like it’d be difficult to actually make spells from it that fit with this work’s magic. It seems incompatible with having any kind of intentional magical results.

Game design could count, though. What kind it’d be would depend on what you mean by ‘game design’ though: if you mean like video game design, then it’d be Perpetual and only the one original copy that you make is magical. If it’s like tabletop game design, then it’d probably be Performative (with the Game Master being the main artist, though it could also be collaborative magic with the players)

Got it. Bullshit indie RPG designs are go, thank you!
